What is Eczema?

What is eczema? That's the first question I asked my son's pediatrician when he was diagnosed with it. The doctor then explained to me that the reason why his skin was red all over, flaky, somehow scaly and oozy is because he had eczema.

The answer to my question was "we don't know what causes eczema but could be chemicals, foods or environmental pollutants. The truth is we are not certain about the causes."

I was left there with my mouth open in disbelief. he told me eczema was a skin condition which I now disagree about. I think it is a symptom of a deeper problem inside your body that is manifesting on your skin.

My son had atopic dermatitis which was triggered by the foods I was giving him mistakenly thinking I was feeding him properly! Other irritants were laundry detergents and fabric materials, but they were NOT the cause as many people think.

There are many types of eczema and according to my doctor a person may develop more than one type. A person may have contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis at the same time. These two are the most common types of eczema.

I have heard many times these types of comments: "What I really hated about eczema is when my skin got painful. It felt like it was being stretched and torn as I moved. This is aside from the itching that drove me crazy all the time. Sometimes I couldn't even sleep because of the itchiness."

"On some occasions my skin would flake. It looked so disgusting that I would not dare go out in public because of the embarrassment I felt when others looked at my flaky, scaly and oozy skin. Did I mention that my skin at times also bled because of eczema?" The nightmares of having such condition!

Medically speaking, Eczema is an inflammation of the outer layer of the skin which is known as the epidermis. It refers to a group or a family of skin conditions that makes the skin irritated, red, itchy and swollen. To read more about the eczema skin relationship go here.

Sometimes the development of fluid-filled bumps that become moist and eventually ooze are visible with individuals who are diagnosed with eczema.

If left untreated, it could cause serious consequences on the skin. That is aside from the discomforts that a person has to face when living with eczema.

What Does Eczema Look Like?

This skin condition is not uncommon and can be passed down from one generation to another. The question: what is eczema? Is also being asked by many mothers who unknowingly mistake eczema as a simple diaper rash. Make sure you read how to recognize what Eczema Looks Like to spot early on if you or your little one has it.

Thanks to my persistence and testing I was able to point out the substances my son is allergic to. It took me a long time to learn how to feed him properly and why eczema was happening to him.

With the help of a cleansing program, the right diet, and prevention to the exposure to such substances, amongst others I was able to get rid of my son's eczema. He feels free... he no longer has to suffer the nightmares of having eczema!
