Stated simply, seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition that makes it look scaly, flaky and greasy. It's one type of eczema where the skin is itchy, red, and even swollen.
It usually affects the scalp but it can also affect the face and trunk because these areas of the body are also rich in sebum.
This skin condition is also referred to as seborrehic eczema, which means that it's a papulosquamous disorder (a skin eruption of round, scaly and red puffy bumps that have clear borders) in the three sebum-rich areas.
This type of eczema can also be linked to Malassezia, a degenerative disease of fungi, and immunologic abnormalities.
You may start to have the symptoms of seborrheic eczema when there's a change in humidity or seasons, a trauma like scratching on patches of skin that itches or when a person is going through a period of emotional stress.
This condition of the skin can vary from a mild dandruff to a full blown exfoliative erythroderma.
People at any age are susceptible to seborrheic dermatitis. For adults and adolescents, dandruff is a usual condition. In babies its called cradle cap, and many babies suffer from it. I know my son did.
Did you know babies younger than three months of age are more susceptible to seborrheic dermatitis than any other age in the baby stage? For adults, people from the ages of 30 to 60 are more prone to it. It is also more common in men than women. In any case, it is embarrassing and uncomfortable.
The causes of seborrehic eczema are still to be found. With so many things that could affect a person, the exact cause of this skin condition varies in adults and infants. It can also be a condition that runs in the family.
Other sources say it can also be caused by a fungus known as the Malassezia. This fungus is normally present in the skin. Only, they're in small numbers. When the population of this fungus increases, it then results in skin problems.
When I saw my baby with cradle cap I started to look for more information. I read about studies on hormones, that said this skin disorder often appears in infancy and then disappears before the onset of puberty. Still, I didn't like the look of it and how long the child will have to wait to get rid of it.
When I talked to my pediatrician about it, he simply said "don't worry, it is a very common condition and you just have to apply this mild shampoo and this cream on his scalp and eyebrows and he will be fine." I did it, and the condition did not change much.
At this point I started to be more aware of the product labels. I read the ingredients of the shampoo and topical cream, and I was not very comfortable putting those products on my baby's skin. The medicated shampoo had salicylic acid, others contained zinc pyrthione. The side effects worsen the condition and even cause hair loss.
Many people don't believe there is a cure for it. I do believe in natural cures more than the normal products doctors prescribe which are shampoos with salicylic acid, selenium sulfide, and coal tar. Why would I want to put something with these ingredients on my skin knowing it is one of the most important organs in my body?
The medical solution to cure cradle cap in babies is also not enticing at all. The suggestion is to wash your babies scalp with a shampoo that normally contains tar or other ingredients mentioned above. Did you know the side effects of using these shampoos are red, dry, peeling, or scaling skin? That sounds to me like the problem itself!
I had suffered from seborrheic dermatitis myself and I knew what I had to do...How could I had forgotten about the Dandruff natural remedy? I found this solution after a long search and after trying many products (including over the counter and medicated ones) that only worsen my dandruff. I realized then, that the cause was Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulphate (SLS). An ingredient many shampoos to cure this eczema contain. I also found out that SLS is used as an engine de-greaser! It is a carcinogen.
What was I putting on my scalp? I continued looking for an answer until I found The Dry Itchy Scalp Treatment Guide. I followed the steps and it worked wonders on my hair and scalp... because it is a natural dandruff remedy! I can assure you I was not putting toxic chemicals on my skin. You too, may be pleasantly surprised after using this guide and realizing you finally cured dandruff.
