Olive oil for eczema? This wonderful natural oil is not just for salads anymore, and it can be used to treat eczema. One characteristic of eczema is that it causes dry skin, which can be treated using olive oil as it is rich in Vitamin E (great skin moisturizing agent,) and antioxidants.
Olive oil for eczema comes with many benefits, and one of the most promising is that it does not cause any allergic reaction to most users as it is an all natural product.
When it is applied to the skin, it has the ability to loosen the toughened areas of the epidermis that can be plagued with chronic eczema. You also get a smoother and well moisturized skin with olive oil.
Another symptom of eczema is having flaky skin. This is also addressed with regular use of specific products that have the right content of olive oil, as it takes care of skin's irritation caused by eczema over time.
Why does olive oil work? Because it does not only treat the symptomatic expressions of eczema but also attacks the root cause of eczema in the body when you regularly ingest it.
It also boosts the body's immunity which helps in preventing the future outbreaks of dermatitis. It helps the skin by hydrating it and calming the inflammations from eczema.
If using pure oil let's start by understanding the three kinds of olive oil we have. They are extra-virgin, virgin and pure olive oil.
The first one is the best of all and has acidity of less than 1%, that means the olives were picked and pressed the same day since the acidity increases depending on the time in between from when you pick the olives to the time you press them.
Virgin olive oil has less than 2% acidity, and pure olive oil is lighter in color and has very little aroma.
When using it for treating eczema make sure the oil is cold pressed. Also, buy extra virgin olive oil or the unrefined versions. Purchase the oil in small quantities to avoid oxidation that happens to big batches because of light, heat and air. It should be green, dark green.
When storing it be sure to place it in a dark space away from the light and in glass bottles preferably.
Olive oil helps the affected area by moisturizing it for a long time as it does not dry easily.
To use it, I recommend applying generous amounts on your hands and rubbing the area that has eczema at night time before bed (the time when the itchiness is more severe,) and on the affected areas right after you have taken a shower while the skin is still moist to seal the moisture in.
Other people recommend filling up a small bottle with olive oil mixed with water to spray it on the affected area. I don't prefer this method as I would choose products made with olive oil instead like soaps, and moisturizers. The advantage is their absorbing quality, they are much faster to be absorbed by the skin than pure olive oil, which requires time and patience.
If you suffer from eczema on your hands, apply generous amounts of olive oil and use 100% cotton gloves to sleep at night, of course let the oil dry for 5 minutes before putting the gloves on.
For best results use it daily. I also found that using a small spray bottle is very convenient. I can carry it in my purse to apply it to my son's skin anytime.
Use olive oil with other natural skin treatments, like taking a tee tree oil bath three times per week. Remember olive oil for eczema alone does not cure it but it sure is one of the best home remedies for eczema.
